Who is Generation Y?

  • People who are in Generation Y are people who are born between 1982 and 2002. This generation is also known as the Millennials.
  • Generation Y is the generation in which that grew up with all the technologies made over the year

Marketing to Generation Y:

  • Generation Y has a huge impact on their parents when they are going to purchase an item, because of being so tech savvy before buying anything this generation researches the product, mainly online.
  • Marketing to this generation will actually effect another generation which would be "Baby Boomers" because of the influence they already have, so marketing to generation Y would be like killing two birds with one stone. This would increase the purchases that are made and it is said that the purchases made by the Baby Boomers and Gen Y are the majority of all the purchases in all of North America. (from book)

Seven Ways to Market That Would Catch Generation Y’s Attention:

  1. Gen-Y would be attracted to a product if it were advertised on a social media site or heard about by a person they know.
  2. Gen-Y would be attracted to a product if it were new and unique.
  3. Gen-Y would be attracted to a product if it were an easy product to use in everyday life.
  4. Gen-Y would be attracted to a product if it were a product that could help make a difference in the world in some way.
  5. Gen-Y would be attracted to a product if it were a popular brand name, like for example an Apple Ipod.
  6. Gen-Y would be attracted to a product depending on the amount of affective advertising.
  7. Gen-Y would be Interested to a product that was well known by society.

Gen Y considers before purchasing a product or service:

  1. Cheap cost
  2. Good quality
  3. Fast service
  4. An “experience”

Since Generation Y is an "experience" culture, here are a few things on which would interest this age group, in a marketing tactic.
· Concerts (Gen Y LOVES live music.)

· Extreme sporting events (skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX)

· Movies (mainstream as well as art-house)

· Hiking events (They love the outdoors)

· Video games and video game competitions (Cyber Athlete Professional League, GameCaster, Global Gaming League)

· Mashups (Weather Bonk, Where’s Tim Hibbard, Y! Mash, Sims on Stage)

· Social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, Second Life,, DIGG)

· Tattoo parlors (36 percent of them have at least one tattoo)
